The hunt for a new head coach for the Nigeria Super Eagles seems to be a daunting task after Jose Peseiro opted against extending his contract, barely a month after leading the Super Eagles to a second-placed finish at the 2023 AFCON.

On Friday, 8 March, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) declared the head coach position vacant, while calling on both foreign and local coaches who are interested to indicate interest.

However, in a chat with our correspondent, some supporters of the Super Eagles gave their opinion on the performance of the Super Eagles under the former Portuguese coach.

A football lover, Dotun Vicksome, said Poseiro’s exit was long overdue.

“Poseiro overstayed his welcome, he doesn’t have anything to do with the Super Eagles. He under achieved. This is our golden generation; we shouldn’t waste our time with a good that couldn’t play good football with them.”

On his own part, a fan, Philips Kolawole argued that the NFF should have extended the Portuguese’s stay.

“I really did not support the decision of NFF allowing Poseiro to leave. They should have done better with him, because the last time we reached the AFCON final was 2013, and he took us there. They should have allowed him build the team the more.”

The duo however insisted that a new coach to be hired should be someone who will be ready to integrate home-based players into the Super Eagles system.

Similarly, there have been an overwhelming call that the NFF should appoint an indigenous coach to succeed the Portuguese tactician.
